This Privacy Policy explains what information StrangerChat collects, how it's used, and the choices you have. StrangerChat is built around anonymity by default — there are no accounts, and no real names are ever requested.

1. Information we collect

Information you provide

  • Interests (optional): topics you add to help match you with someone with similar interests.
  • Gender and age: collected in the age-verification step, used for age confirmation and, where offered, gender-based matching preferences.
  • Chat messages: text you send during a chat is transmitted to the person you're matched with. Messages aren't stored on our servers after your session ends.

Information collected automatically

  • Session data: your randomly generated username, selected interests, and mode (text/video) are stored temporarily in your browser's session storage and cleared when you close the tab or session.
  • Technical data: IP address, browser type, and device information, used for abuse prevention, rate-limiting, and diagnosing technical issues.
  • Video/audio streams: video chat uses peer-to-peer (WebRTC) connections where possible, meaning your video and audio are streamed directly to the person you're matched with rather than stored on our servers. We don't record video chats.

2. How we use information

  • To match you with another user, including by shared interests when provided.
  • To verify age eligibility and enforce our Community Rules.
  • To detect, investigate, and prevent abuse, spam, and illegal activity.
  • To maintain and improve the reliability and performance of the Service.

We don't sell your personal information to third parties, and we don't use your chat content for advertising.

3. Cookies and similar technologies

We use minimal cookies and browser storage necessary for the Service to function, such as session storage for your generated username and chat preferences. We don't use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.

4. How information is shared

We may share information:

  • With moderators or automated systems reviewing a reported chat, limited to what's needed to investigate the report.
  • When required by law, such as in response to a valid legal request, or to protect the safety of a user or the public.
  • With service providers who help operate the Service (such as hosting), under obligations to protect the data.

5. Data retention

Session data (username, interests, mode) is cleared when your session ends. Technical logs used for security and abuse prevention are retained only as long as necessary for that purpose, then deleted or anonymized.

6. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and peer-to-peer video where possible. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security.

7. Children's privacy

StrangerChat is not intended for anyone under 18. We don't knowingly collect information from minors, and any session found to belong to a minor is terminated and associated data is deleted.

8. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or request deletion of personal data we hold about you. Because most session data is never persisted beyond your session, there's typically little to request. For technical logs, you can reach out using the contact details below.

9. International users

StrangerChat connects users globally, and information may be processed in countries other than your own. By using the Service, you consent to this processing as described in this policy.
